Originally from Europe, I am a fine art photographer, painter, graphic and a web designer.

I studied art, music, photography and design
for many years, and nothing inspires me more
then traveling and seeing different places.
I love to work with vintage cameras, different textures and materials, paper, old ephemera
to make collages, tags and postcards.
When I travel, I like to look for different
vintage pieces that catch my eye,
and you can find some of them in my shop.

Even in this digital and computer age,
I still prefer to use alternative processes
such as polaroids, film, polaroid transfers, emultion lifts hand stamping and gocco printing.
My tools are different cameras,some digital but mostly vintage, wacom tablet,computer, pencils, markers, ink, scanners, paper, paint and everything else i could think of.

Maka Le Wakan is from the Sioux language meaning The Earth is Sacred. I make nature inspired objects for the home using just about any materials I find around me. I'm also a mixed media artist so I'm constantly on the look out for materials to use in my work. I used to be an interior designer, hence my love for decorative objects. I live in an isolated part of France with my partner and 4 cats, surrounded by old volcanoes, lakes and forests which is what inspires me both in creating these objects and my paintings. It's 1 hour from any shops so I've learned to be very inventive and I've certainly become better at improvising since I've lived here! It's also quite cold so many hours are spent in front of the fire just making things and being creative.

I'm always thinking of ways to reuse or recycle it into something fresh and new, with an edge it never dreamed of having. Or a use it wasn't meant for, but which suits it perfectly.

Things of elegant beauty from days gone by put a smile on my face and give me a feeling of connection with the past, a sense of belonging, a curiosity about the future.
I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had been born in a different time.

I love old stuff, and I like using it to create something interesting and new, or just using it in new ways. And I love nature and using its bounty to create. Combining the two is my hope for this shop. Like recycling, yet somehow a little bit nicer.

Examining what lies behind the surface, and its inherent dichotomies. Amid the chaos, the white cuckoo bird represents the embodiment of hope.

I was captivated by the stance, one day, of my Boston Terrier, Enid. As she looked heavenward, her body formed a right angle: a perfect 'L.' When I tried to capture it on canvas, I was struck by the yearning of the pose. I put her against a formal background that might suggest infinity.

Matches

An original lovely macabre pen and ink drawing based on "The Dreadful Story of Pauline and the Matches" from Struwwelpeter (Shockheaded Peter) by Heinrich Hoffmann. This is drawn in a cross-hatch style with a very fine point(that painstakingly and lovingly took hours and hours and lots of hand cramps to accomplish); a style similar in nature to Edward Gorey and Maurice Sendak.

Most of my work revolves around the general themes of challenge, balance, and metamorphosis. I am inspired by the surrealist movement, the Dalai Lama, and David Lynch. Currently, I am somewhat sidetracked by the best work I've ever created, my sons, Vincent and Edward, but hope to be joyfully paint-splattered again very soon. - Diana Crites
