A new year brings about a brand new venture. An etching press, tools, inks, copper plates, etc. All the goodies a girl needs to branch out and explore. All that remains to be seen is the brute force necessary behind the scenes. The incising on the copper plate is no joke - a definite labor of love.

I'm finding my own way through the engraving maze and it's really quite exciting. I'll post images as they are completed (there is quite a bit of trial and error involved). Here's the set-up in a unused pristine condition.

Even in this digital and computer age,
I still prefer to use alternative processes

Maka Le Wakan is from the Sioux language meaning The Earth is Sacred. I make nature inspired objects for the home using just about any materials I find around me. I'm also a mixed media artist so I'm constantly on the look out for materials to use in my work. I used to be an interior designer, hence my love for decorative objects. I live in an isolated part of France with my partner and 4 cats, surrounded by old volcanoes, lakes and forests which is what inspires me both in creating these objects and my paintings. It's 1 hour from any shops so I've learned to be very inventive and I've certainly become better at improvising since I've lived here! It's also quite cold so many hours are spent in front of the fire just making things and being creative.

A little bit about the girl behind the camera -

I am a self taught photographer and full time mother inspired by my daughters laugh, the connection I see between people, the warmth of the sun, and a stark landscape. I love vibrant colours, the feel of sand and grass underfoot, rustic country scenes, all things vintage and brown paper packages wrapped in string.

Photography for me is magical and mysterious. I was given my first camera by my parents when I was 8 (a Vivitar, I still have it), and even before having my own camera I was always fascinated with the magic of it all. My mother would press a button on the polaroid camera, and a piece of paper would emerge that slowly revealed an image, a moment in time forever captured. What is more amazing than that? I love nothing more than to hear the click of the shutter release on a camera, to capture an image that makes me think "WOW". If someone else likes the photo too, well, that is the ultimate bonus.

Being self taught I focus more on the emotion of an image than the technical aspects. I am always experimenting with various mediums, so there will always be something new added to my shop as my art evolves.

I'm a stay-at-home mom to an AMAZING 4 year old boy named Connor. For as long as I can recall, I have been obsessed with art, photography, and creating in general (regardless of medium or means). Prior to becoming a mom (frankly the toughest and most rewarding job there is!) I worked as a child and family therapist with children with developmental and behavioral difficulties. I look forward to one day returning to this line of work.

From one parent to another, rest assured that I only use LEAD-FREE and NON-TOXIC paints and glazes on my items. NO pressure-treated (chemicals!) wood is employed in creating these little wonders! All edges are sanded to enable safe play!

Rachel Demsick has had an artist's eye from the beginning. Growing up in the small town of Franklin, MI, she used art to make the world around her her own, whether it was painting designs across the walls of her teenage bedroom or filling endless journals with drawings and collages. After graduating high school, Rachel moved to Ann Arbor, where she studied art and design and began to take photographs of the city and her friends. The tools I use include a variety of cameras, both film and digital, as well as a fun mix of artistic media (acrylics, oils, inks, pencils, etc.) used on an eclectic collection of canvases, both formal and makeshift. Often, my illustrations involve scanning the hand-drawn/painted artwork into the computer where they are then combined with a blend of digital painting and my photography (both digital and scanned film) in order to texturize and create new dimension for the piece.

My photography has been found in in a variety of publications both in the US and abroad, including the Annual IPA Book, Photographer's Forum's Best of Photography Annual, and Camera Arts Magazine; and has been selected to be in an annual International group show at Soho Photo Gallery in Tribeca, NYC for the last two years.

I was captivated by the stance, one day, of my Boston Terrier, Enid. As she looked heavenward, her body formed a right angle: a perfect 'L.' When I tried to capture it on canvas, I was struck by the yearning of the pose. I put her against a formal background that might suggest infinity.

An original lovely macabre pen and ink drawing based on "The Dreadful Story of Pauline and the Matches" from Struwwelpeter (Shockheaded Peter) by Heinrich Hoffmann. This is drawn in a cross-hatch style with a very fine point(that painstakingly and lovingly took hours and hours and lots of hand cramps to accomplish); a style similar in nature to Edward Gorey and Maurice Sendak.

Most of my work revolves around the general themes of challenge, balance, and metamorphosis. I am inspired by the surrealist movement, the Dalai Lama, and David Lynch.
